Activity Description

Ceres Rail Company offers a magnificent return trip to the Elgin Railway Market aboard our historic passenger train. Our train is usually hauled by a heritage steam locomotive and a diesel, but at times, due to the fire risk and other events beyond our control, the trip may be hauled by two diesel locomotives.

The journey begins at 07h45 from the platform at Harbour Bridge Hotel and Suites, Dockrail Road, Foreshore, Cape Town. Once aboard you will enjoy a 3-hour rail experience to Elgin, traveling through the beautiful Cape, up the majestic Sir Lowrys Pass, and then down into the Elgin Valley. We have a fully licensed cash bar on board as well as a dining car providing coffee and other snacks. Various books and memorabilia are also available for purchase onboard. We also have a card machine to make life easier.

Our destination is the fabulous Art Deco & Art Nouveau inspired Elgin Railway Market (www.elginrailwaymarket.co.za) where you will spend a few hours at your leisure. At the market, whilst enjoying the live music, you can wander through the many stalls offering delicious food, a wide selection of local wines, ciders and gin. Various bespoke craft stalls selling a wide range of goods including jewellery, leather goods, wire art, etc are also on site. There is a wonderful play area outside for the children to enjoy too.
We depart from Elgin at 14h15 , arriving back Cape Town at approximately 18h00.

Customer Reviews

Wonderful experience will definitely be coming back - John clarke

Fantastic trip on the steam train. Exemplary service, spectacular views - well worth the little bit extra to be in the Observation Car. Get in early so you can nab the window seat right at the back. But if you miss out, don't worry - every other seat is comfortable and offers an all round view. Keep that camera ready, there are picture opportunities everywhere. Start the day with a bottle of bubbles and then sit back and enjoy. The staff were so friendly and helpful with a lot of information about the journey and the train. It can get a bit warm in the afternoon, so make sure you have cold water. My family of grandparents and children all loved the trip - it is one of everyone! - Jamie Hassard

Absolutely loved doing this! We've been meaning to go on this adventure for so long and it lived up to expectations. I highly suggest getting a seat in the observation deck and spending your morning chugging past sea and mountains while you sip on your ice cold refreshments. The staff was so happy and eager to help us at all times and honestly made the trip so much fun. Please do yourself a favour and go on this little Saturday adventure. - Cara Thomas

It was an amazing experience to do this trip. To pass the landscape, the atmosphere in the old train and the market in Elgin are all great??? Would do it again. - Annette Schmitt

We enjoyed our train trip. We followed the guidance asking to wear closed in shoes but not many others did. A shame really as there wasn't any need to. The sofas in the observation car were a real treat to sit on. Have recommended the trip to others already. - Su Kensley
