Activity Description

Ceres Rail Company offers a magnificent return trip to the Elgin Railway Market aboard our historic passenger train. Our train is usually hauled by a heritage steam locomotive and a diesel, but at times, due to the fire risk and other events beyond our control, the trip may be hauled by two diesel locomotives.

The journey begins at 07h45 from the platform at Harbour Bridge Hotel and Suites, Dockrail Road, Foreshore, Cape Town. Once aboard you will enjoy a 3-hour rail experience to Elgin, traveling through the beautiful Cape, up the majestic Sir Lowrys Pass, and then down into the Elgin Valley. We have a fully licensed cash bar on board as well as a dining car providing coffee and other snacks. Various books and memorabilia are also available for purchase onboard. We also have a card machine to make life easier.

Our destination is the fabulous Art Deco & Art Nouveau inspired Elgin Railway Market ( where you will spend a few hours at your leisure. At the market, whilst enjoying the live music, you can wander through the many stalls offering delicious food, a wide selection of local wines, ciders and gin. Various bespoke craft stalls selling a wide range of goods including jewellery, leather goods, wire art, etc are also on site. There is a wonderful play area outside for the children to enjoy too.
We depart from Elgin at 14h15 , arriving back Cape Town at approximately 18h00.

Customer Reviews

This is an experience that should not be missed! From the train ride to the experience of the market itself, was absolutely wonderful. The volunteer staff on the coaches were so helpful and friendly throughout the train trip and made it feel more like being with family. The market itself was also a wonderful experience with good vibes and great food. This whole experience is something that both local South Africans as well as tourists will absolutely love. Thank you Ceres rail company! You have done well! - Retha Badenhorst

Had a great time and can thoroughly recommend this experience. - V Baker

It was a fantastic experience. The staff were very helpful, and well organised. Everything was a pure pleasure. - Deon Pretorius

I had no expectations of the steam train to Elgin, hoping merely that it would be okay. However, I was pleasantly surprised by the entire journey and rate the experience as ABOVE AVERAGE. From the the start, we were greeted by the most friendly and enthusiastic staff and directed to our Lounge Car. Our Tub Chairs in the Lounge Car were comfortable and well positioned for maximum views. We were located close to the Bar - for self service; and close to the tuck shop for the purchase of our morning coffee and a breakfast sandwich. We were kept informed throughout our trip of what to expect, what to look out for and estimated time of arrival. The market at Elgin was interesting and we had a huge selection of food stalls from which to select what we each wanted to eat for lunch. The cherry on top was the most amazing views, ever changing, that we got to see, share, experience and photograph. A train trip well worth recommending to anyone wondering whether they should do it or not. We arrived back at our starting point at 17h30 - tired but delighted. - Helga Easom
