Introducing the Overberg Explorer – Steam Train Journeys from Botrivier to Elgin Railway Market
Step aboard the Overberg Explorer for a nostalgic steam-hauled adventure through the heart of the Overberg! Operating out of Botrivier, this charming excursion runs twice daily, with departures at 09h00 and 13h30, offering guests a delightful rail journey to the vibrant Elgin Railway Market and back.
Enjoy the sights, sounds, and rhythm of yesteryear as our vintage steam locomotive pulls you along the picturesque countryside. Once at Elgin, guests will have approximately 1 to 1.5 hours to explore the market’s live music, food stalls, artisan crafts, and unique atmosphere before returning to Botrivier by train.
While this is a shorter journey with limited onboard amenities, light refreshments and snacks will be available for purchase during the ride, so you can sit back, sip, and savour the moment.

The whole experience, from arriving at the Botriver station to leaving it, was a delight. Everything was very well run, and the staff were all wonderful. Our first time on a steam train and what a fantastic experience it was! It was such a lovely family outing for us and memories that will stay with us a lifetime! Even though we live in Pringle Bay, I'd never been to Bot River and now I just have such a fondness for that little town because of this trip, it would be lovely it was a regular event! The scenery was so beautiful, framed so nicely by the windows of our carridge. Would be great if there was a way to be kept up to date with any info regarding volunteering to make it possible for this Bot River trip to be kept active, myself and my son's would love to be involved! - Anna
